Historical and Cultural Places of Great Britain

It's natural that the capital of the country, London, is the richest and world famous places. They are Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul's Cathedral, and Trafalgar Square with the monument to Admiral Nelson in its center and many others.

Among the other places of interest it's necessary to tell you about Stratford-on-Avon, the place associated with the name and life of William Shakespeare. In Henry Street there's a wooden house where the greatest English poet and playwright was born. In 1932 the Royal Shakespeare Theatre was opened in Stratford. Only Shakespeare's plays are performed there.

Oxford and Cambridge are the oldest education centers of Great Britain. Oxford's first college was founded in 1249 and Cambridge's firstin 1342. Oxford and Cambridge Universities are federation of parallel colleges, some big, some small, each governed by its staff and each with its chief. The Asmolean Museum at Oxford has one of the most important collections in England. And there is no finer Cambridge.

One of the most beautiful parts of Great Britain is the Highlands of Scotland. The mountain and the rocks of the highlands are the highest mountains in the British Isles.

Another place which is worth speaking about is Cardiffthe capital of Wales. There are some places of inters there: the Castle, National Museum of Wales, and Welsh Folk Museum.

There is a prehistoric monument in Great Britain. It's Stonehenge. Stones stand there in circles or are arranged into a horseshoe shape. Some scientists consider that Stonehenge was built in order to calculate the annual calendar and seasons.
