Oxygenated Water: Getting More 'O' in Your H2O

In the not-so-distant past, consumers' drinking water options were pretty basic. Now, however, water is no longer just plain water. It's fruit-flavored, vitamin-infused and even "oxygenated."

Fire Mountain Beverage Co. has introduced a new twist to flavored water by adding oxygen. The company recently launched a new line called Five O2 (Flavor Infused Vitamin Enriched with Oxygen). Oxygen, the company claims, "provides better vitamin absorption, better circulation, more efficient digestion, improved stamina and improved mental clarity."

The Five O2 beverages also contain B vitamins, vitamin C, potassium and niacin and come in lemon, tropical, berry and mango

flavors.

Bottled water is one of the fastest-growing beverages in the United States. According to the International Bottled Water Association, Americans consumed more than 6.8 billion gallons of bottled water as recently as 2004, which amounts to 24 gallons per person and $9.2 billion in sales.

The popularity of bottled water is due in part to increased safety concerns about tap water and more health-conscious consumers who desire healthy alternatives to an array of drinks that are high in caffeine and sugar.

While the proposed consumption of water intake varies among health experts worldwide, most recommend drinking water in lieu of drinks high in sugar and calories and those that contain preservatives.

Hydration is a key element that contributes to the functionality of the body as a whole. The body loses up to 10 cups of water a day through breathing, perspiration and elimination.

As for how many glasses should be consumed a day, pay attention to your body's natural indicator. When you are thirsty, reach for a beverage.
